Contemporary fiction from China, read in English translation. Short stories by Mo Yan, Wang Anyi, Yu Hua, and others, as well as selections from pop novels. We will explore what is on the minds of China's best writers today, as their society undergoes rapid and often disconcerting change. The nature of different writers' appeal to Chinese readers will also be discussed.
Professor Ronald Egan, East Asian Studies, areas of research are Chinese literature and culture, including biography, poetry, and fiction of the modern and pre-modern periods. He teaches Chinese 142 (Historic Lives), Chinese 158 (The Problem of Love), and Comparative Literature 31 (Introduction To Asian Literature).
