This seminar will use the history of cinema as well as contemporary newspaper accounts and current websites to examine the oppressive stereotypes that construct people with disabilities as permanent outsiders. Recent efforts to break out of these constructions will also be examined. Issues will be tied to students' own experiences and unstated assumptions. Individuals involved in the disability rights movement will speak to the class and students will have the opportunity to interview local activists.
Professor George Singer, Education, teaches courses on family and disability, and methods of teaching individuals with severe disabilities. His research focuses on families of individuals with disabilities and special education.
