Electra's story is a drama of family trouble, murder and revenge that inspired playwrights ancient (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides) and modern (O'Neill, Giraudoux, Sartre). This seminar focuses on reading and discussion of how each author brings Electra to life in new ways. Course may include a field trip to the Getty Center Museum in Los Angeles to see Electra's story in vase paintings.
Professor Francis Dunn, Classics, teaches Classics 40 (Greek Mythology), and graduate courses in Greek tragedy and poetry. He is a specialist in Greek tragedy, especially Euripides.
