Sending a spacecraft into space, maneuvering it and returning to earth poses extreme demands on materials. In many cases new materials have had to be developed. We will describe how materials are selected, how they are made and tested and why composites are often the best materials for space applications.
Professors David Clarke and Frank Zok, Materials Department, research expertise is in structural materials, high temperature materials and composites. They have taught a broad range of courses in mechanical properties of materials, thermodynamics, composites, optical materials and phase transformation.
