Since the ninth century, England has always been ruled by a monarch, except for one short but fascinating period: the Lord Protectorship of Oliver Cromwell (1653-1658). But the lack of a king was far from being the only extraordinary feature of this short but fascinating interval. The key to understanding it is the complex character of one man, Oliver Cromwell, whose life, career and policies we will examine.
Professor J. Sears McGee, History, research concerns politics and religion in early modern Britain (c. 1500-1700). He teaches History 4B and History 140AB.
