INT94IV: Living With Global Warming

3 Wednesdays (10/19, 10/26, and 11/2) 5:00-7:00pm, Ellison 3621
1 Saturday Meeting (11/12), 1:00-5:00pm, Girvetz 2128

Enrollment Code: 66142

This participatory class will examine observed global and regional changes in climate, present and future contribution of greenhouse gases emissions from various countries, and the potential impacts on climate. The complexity of the climate system and the associated intricacies of predicting its changes will be addressed in the context climate models. Students will discuss possible approaches (including emissions limitations through taxations and carbon trading, energy conservation, adaptation, mitigation and carbon sequestering) to addressing future global warming impacts. The course will include lectures, in-class small group discussions, role playing (e.g., representatives of different countries) and negotiations. In a final summit, students from the OLLI program together with Freshman students will negotiate elements of an environmental agreement that takes into account the particular circumstances of the negotiating parties (e.g., developed vs. developing countries) and with a focus on issues of equities across generations and countries.
