This seminar will focus on the effects that various drugs of abuse have on brain function that result in the change in behavior, called addiction. Students will become familiar with the brain regions that are central to drug reward and learn the mechanisms of action of some of the major classes of drug abuse including alcohol, stimulants (cocaine and methamphetamine), opiates (heroin and morphine) and sedatives (Valium).
Professor Karen Szumlinski, Psychology, research interests include neurobiology, addiction and schizophrenia. She has taught Psychology 3 (Brain and Behavior) and Psychology 115/215 (Neuropharmacology).
