Alchemy, the art of transforming base metals into gold, has been a dream of humans for over two thousand years. But gold making was never the sole aim of the world's alchemists. In every tradition, we find evidence for the loftier goal of self-transformation into a supernatural being, a god, or a being worthy of god. Every alchemical tradition had religious goals of this sort, and so alchemy was as much a spiritual quest as it was a "scientific" pursuit.
Professor David White, Religious Studies, research: Hinduism, history of Indian alchemy, Tantra course: Religious Approaches to Death, Hindu Devotionalism, Hindu Mysticism, Creation Myths.
