Discussing communication problems and solutions. Can an invitation be framed in a way that it is clear, but also guards against rejection? How can one manage disagreement in a way that may lead to resolution or compromise rather than hurt feelings? Volunteers will role-play situations from their own experience. Course has two enrollment codes, one for women, one for men, to ensure an even gender balance and facilitate discussion.
Professor Thomas J. Scheff, Sociology, has taught courses such as Love and Heartbreak in Popular Songs, Conflict Resolution, and Interpersonal Relations. His research has been in the areas of sociology of emotions, and mental health and illness.
