Description:
People with disabilities have often appeared in the cinema since it’s beginning at
the end of the 19th century. Until recently, they were portrayed in stereotypical ways
that did not allow audiences to see people with disabilities as individuals. Over the
past several years Hollywood films have been influenced by the disability rights
movement. As a result, characters who experience disabilities have recently been
portrayed at greater depth so that their impairments are not their dominant
characteristics. This seminar will begin with an overview of traditional stereotypes
as seen in film up until the 1980’s. Students will work in small groups to develop
and present a review of a recent film featuring a prominent character who experiences
a disability.
Professor George Singer, Education, teaches courses on family and disability, and methods of teaching individuals with severe disabilities. His research focuses on families of individuals with disabilities and special education.
