Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) Along the California Coast

Day: Tuesdays & Thursdays. First class meeting: January 22.
Time: 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Location: Biology 2R
Meet at the front door of Biol II, 10-15 minutes before class.

Enrollment Code: 59170

Description:
California, like other coastal environments around the world, is increasingly experiencing blooms of toxic algae. These outbreaks have serious health effects for humans and marine animals, cause economic problems, and potentially  threaten fisheries. Although California was the first state to recognize algal toxins     and the first to institute a monitoring program, information about toxin-producing populations statewide is still quite limited. The goal of this seminar is to acquaint students with the biology, ecology and societal consequences of Harmful Algal Blooms along the entire length of the California coast (1,100 miles) between Oregon and Mexico.

Barbara Prezelin, Biology, and Ecology, Evolution & Marine Biology, teaches courses in biological oceanography and phytoplankton biology/ecology as well as advanced courses in marine primary productivity and the photoecology of aquatic micro-organisms. Her research has been largely in the area of phytoplankton ecology, with recent focus on Harmful Algal Blooms; ozone depletion and ultraviolet radiation effects on marine productivity; coastal  forcing of primary production and ecosystem dynamics along the west Antarctic peninsula.
