Description:
This seminar will explore the relationship between art and civic engagement. Can reading an essay or novel, viewing a film or a group of photographs, visiting a museum, or hearing testimonies of survivors of atrocity stimulate engagement? What role does the media play in creating empathy? In promoting apathy? What are the responsibilities of education in promoting awareness and activism? These are some of the questions we will consider through our readings of short written pieces and viewing of images from the contemporary world.
Professor Susan Derwin, German and Comparative Literature, areas of research and teaching include the Holocaust, 19th and 20th century Europeans and American novel and memoir, and critical theory.
