Day: Thursdays
Time: 1:00-1:50 p.m.
Location: Music 2210
Enrollment Code: 25841
Description:
A hands-on examination of selected instruments from UCSB’s Eichheim
Collection of Musical Instruments. The collection, which numbers more than
900 instruments, ranks as one of the finest in the country. Global in scope,
the collection excels in holdings from Africa, India, China, Japan and
Southeast Asia. Students will examine instruments from these areas and
discuss their construction and acoustical properties, as well as the role they
play in society. There will be emphasis both on current usage and on
historical origins. Each student will have the opportunity to focus on a
particular instrument and at the end of the quarter will present a profile for
the instrument and its role in today’s society. Attendance at the weekly
Wednesday Noon World Music concerts in the Music Bowl is encouraged.
Professor Dolores Hsu, Music, teaches courses in both musicology and ethnomusicology. Her research focuses on text/music relationships with emphasis on 19th and early 20th century music.
