In this seminar we will examine the historical origins, evolution, and competing visions
of the “American Dream” as expressed in politics, social thought, and popular culture since the late 19th century. We will pay particular attention to the way the “American
Dream” has been invoked as the basis of political and economic reform movements, by figures as varied as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Ronald Reagan, and
Barack Obama.
Professor Alice O’Connor, History, her areas of research and teaching include the 20th century U.S., the history of social policy, wealth and poverty, and U.S. urban history. She has written about the history of inequality, changing ideas about poverty, and the politics of organized philanthropy, among other topics.
