Who was Hitler and why do we see him the way that we do? Was he a madman, a genius? Can we picture him as a “normal” person? Was he part Jewish? Homosexual? And in any case, does any of this matter? We will investigate these questions and look back in films and texts to see how Hitler has been portrayed since the mid-1920’s. Professor Harold Marcuse, History, area of research focuses on 20th century Germany, in particular the role that crucial events played in shaping German culture. He calls his approach "reception history"----how historical events are received and imagined by people as time goes by. Professor Marcuse has written about the history of Holocaust memorials and about the history of former Nazi concentration camps.
