INT94IE: Yuri Kochiyama, Malcom X and the Politics of Third World Solidarity

Last 5 Fridays, 10-11:50am, HSSB 1231

Enrollment Code: 26385

This seminar will examine the influences of the Black Liberation Movement on the development of Asian American activism. We will focus on the life of Yuri Kochiyama, who gained a radical consciousness through her interactions with Malcolm X and associates in Harlem. Yuri Kochiyama is one of the most prominent grassroots activists. Her life's work for Black liberation, Japanese American redress, ethnic studies, political prisoners, and Third World solidarity counters the dominant image of Asian Americans as model minorities who do not make waves.

Professor Diane Fujino, Asian American Studies, does research on Asian American social movements, Japanese American radicalism, critical race studies, intersection of race, class and gender. She has also written a biography on Yuri Kochiyama.
