This seminar is a guided group exploration of the ritual knowledge preserved in ancient monuments known as stelae. We will begin with a brief introduction to classic Maya culture, then dissect the intellectual and material culture captured by a single monument, the artist's place in society, the role of astronomy in ritual timing, mythological imagery and so forth.
Professor Gerardo Aldana, Chicano Studies, teaches courses on ancient Mesoamerica. His primary research focus is on the Classic Maya intellectual community through their artistic, hieroglyphic and scientific products.
