INT94MC: The Cultural Roots of the Japanese Horror Film

Description:
From classical tales of noblemen and warriors to ghost dramas of medieval and early modern Japan, the ghost provides a site of exploration for Japanese ideas about life, death, and – the horror film! We will examine texts, pictures and films to learn the true origins of Japanese horror and it’s many famous American remakes.

Professor Katherine Saltzman-Li, East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies, research is premodern Japanese theatre (kabuki) and literature. Courses taught: Traditional Japanese Theatre, Classical Japanese Literature, Medieval Japanese Literature, Introduction to East Asia, Japanese Folklore, Classical Japanese Language, and Readings in Japanese.
