INT94GL: Math in the Movies

Day: Tuesdays
Time: 2:00-3:50 p.m.
Location: Girvetz 1108

Enrollment Code: 25395

Description:
One of the most famous movies to feature mathematics and mathematicians is "A Beautiful Mind" in which the story of John Nash is told, but there are many other movies featuring influential mathematicians. For example, we will explore, through film and discussion, the life and work of Paul Erdos, the wandering mathematician and Julia Robinson, driven by the quest to solve one of the central problems in modern mathematics. We will also discuss questions like "How old is the number one?" and "Who was Pythagoras?". Bring an open mind - no mathematics required!

Professor Dawn Holmes, Statistics and Applied Probability, is currently working in Artificial Intelligence, specifically in Bayesian networks with missing information. Professor Holms also does research in Intuitionistic mathematics. She has recently taught courses in Probability, Statistical Computing and Introductory Statistics. Prior to coming to UCSB , she taught Philosophy of Mathematics at University of Leeds, UK.
