Description:
An introduction to China today, seen through the preparations for the Beijing Olympics 2008. The course will focus on social, political, and ideological issues involved in China's determination to showcase itself as host of the Olympics next year. Topics will include urban planning for the Games, nationalism, media imaging, political dissent, and athlete
training.
Professor Ronald Egan, East Asian, areas of research are Chinese literature and culture, including biography, poetry, and fiction of the modern and pre-modern periods. He teaches Chinese 101A-B, Chinese 148, Comparative Literature 31.
