Description:
Have you ever gone to a Contemporary Art Museum and wondered if that strange colorful object you saw is a painting or a sculpture? Or puzzled at an image that looks like a painting, at first glance, only to discover close up that it was actually made entirely of candy? This 5 week seminar will introduce students to exciting new trends in art; in the field of contemporary painting via slide & DVD lectures, local gallery and museum field trips, and online research.

Professor Jane Callister, Art, taught this course in CCS Winter 2007 Art 107 (please visit the College of Creative Studies website for more information) but modified for freshman students. She has taught a range of courses in Art since joining UCSB faculty in 1996, from contemporary art theory, studio courses in painting and mixed media approaches (from freshman to graduate levels) covering a wide array of social and aesthetic issues, and has a background in interdisciplinary practices. She has a BFA from the UK, an MA in Art (thesis entitled: "Feminism & Postmodernism in Contemporary Art 1990") and an MFA in painting. (the terminal degree in studio arts) She is an active, participating and well known contemporary painter in the field as well as recent recipient of a UCSB distinguished teaching award. Since becoming chair of the department of Art in July 2006, she has a lessor load in teaching and misses it! So she'd like to add this as a way to positively impact our future potential student population, by mentoring those she may eventually get to work with at the advanced level when she hopes to return to teaching full time in 2009.
