Description:
This one-unit course will provide a basic introduction to the science of hearing and audiology. The course will survey the human auditory system: anatomy, physiology, normal and abnormal functioning, evaluation of hearing disorders and their treatments; and sound: types, measurements, and uses. The course will be very practical and will provide students with valuable take-home
messages about their ears and how to take care of them and their hearing. It will also provide an introduction to potential career opportunities in the allied medical field of
audiology and stimulate students to consider
audiology as a program of study and possible career. This course helps provide students with an overview and understanding of methods
and applications of science fundamentals that
govern the biological and physical world. It
will focus on practical applications of
theories that can be used to enhance communication for all persons, particularly those with hearing loss and their families.
Professor Jeffrey L. Danhauer, Speech, teaches a series of courses in Audiology including Physics of Sound, Diagnostic Audiology and Aural Rehabilitation and Hearing Aids. His research includes work on speech perception by normal and hearing-impaired persons, newborn hearing screening programs, otoacoustic emissions, and hearing aids.
