The course will examine the ongoing transformation of New Orleans before and after the tragedy wrought by Hurricane Katrina. The goal of the class is to look at the worst natural disaster in US history from a number of lenses. We will also explore the consequences of this event for a wide range of critical issues. Specifically, individual classes will be devoted to the following themes: New Orleans history, African American culture, race relations, poverty, environmental equity, disaster relief, and rebuilding policies and conflicts.
Professor Clyde Woods, Black Studies, area of specialty is the study of African American regional history, culture and public policy. Among the places studied are the Mississippi Delta and Southern California. Also, he is a student of US urban history. Other areas of interest include race and public policy and the Blues and Hip Hop studies.
